Shawnee Peak Employees and Guests donated 1,500 pounds of relief items last weekend. Shawnee Peak owner, Chet Homer, pledged discounts on lift tickets for guests who donated dried foods, bottled water, baby items and basic medical supplies.
Employees were challenged to donate through an internal contest - the department which gave the most items would win prizes.
Shawnee Peak teamed up with Greg Brooks, of Subsea Research LLC from Gorham, a Maine-based Shipwreck Hunting Company, which is sending a 220-foot ship to Haiti this week. All donated items will be brought directly to those who need it most.
Donated items included: a backboard, wheelchair, crutches, walkers, bottled water, baby diapers, dried foods, children's toys, bandages, guaze, antiseptic cream and many other items.
"We saw the devastating images on the news and just knew that our employees and guests want to help," said Josh Harrington, sales coordinator at Shawnee Peak. "Giving money to the Red Cross and other relief organizations is a great way to help, but we thought that people would appreciate donating tangible items that earthquake victims can use right now.
"Having spoken with Mr. Brooks from Subsea Research, we knew that his knowledge of Haiti and contacts there would get our items into the right hands as soon as possible," said Harrington.
Subsea LLC has a desalinization plant on board and will be able to provide 12,000 gallons of fresh drinking water/day while they are in port in Haiti. They still need monetary donations to raise money for the 25,000 gallons of fuel they need for the trip. Call Greg Brooks at 207-879-1758 for more information.
